Trivium's Matt Heafy has revealed that his long-awaited black metal band now has a name, some big guest names and an approximate release date. The band is called Ibaraki, the guests are black metal demigods Nergal (Behemoth) and Ihsahn (Emperor) and the album will be out midway through next year.
Heafy let the word slip on a recent appearance on The Jasta Show, confirming that the project that has reportedly been in the works for 11 years, will finally see the light of day (or should that be the black of night?) next year and he couldn't be more excited to show off a darker side of his metal mind.
I was able to finally finish my black metal record with Ihsahn from Emperor, he's been producing and co-writing that with me for about 11 years, and it finally comes out in the middle of next year, which should be fun.
As fans of Trivium would already know, Heafy is a bit obsessed with Japanese folklore and history, and Ibaraki will see even more of that passion on display.
There isn't really a band that writes about Japanese folklore or the Shinto gods and goddesses and fictitious stories of Japanese history. So I changed the band name to Ibaraki, which is actually Trivium's mascot — an easter egg in there — and the entire project is Japanese-themed. The art, the lyrics, I'm actually singing in Japanese. Ishahn's on the record, Nergal's on the record.
Heafy who was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and an American father has long incorporated elements of Japanese history, folklore and culture into Trivium's music, a trend that is set to continue with the release of the band's new album In The Court of The Dragon which will drop on October 8th via Roadrunner Records.
