Legendary nu-metal producer Ross Robinson has named his two favourite Slipknot songs.
Speaking to Revolver, Robinson, who produced Slipknot's game-changing self-titled debut and its relentless follow-up Iowa named Slipknot deep cuts Eyeless and Scissors as his favourite Slipknot song. Robinson provided an explanation for his choices, stating that it was due to the two tracks' "uniqueness, and just what we captured was so fucking over the top".
Robinson, who is renowned for his work not only with Slipknot but with their nu-metal contemporaries Limp Bizkit, Sepultura, Soulfly and Korn followed up his selections by revealing that he once warned Korn guitarist James 'Munky' Shaffer "not to get scared" when he pressed play on the first Slipknot record because Slipknot were "ruthless".
"I remember handing [Korn guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer] the CD and saying, 'Dude, be careful when you press play. This is ruthless. Don't get scared.' I was just like, 'This is ruthless.' He never mentioned it after that. I don't know what his reaction was."
Robinson, who has earned the moniker of 'The Godfather of Nu-Metal' elaborates further, revealing the primary difference he saw between Korn and Slipknot even at that early stage of Slipknot's career.
"But for me in that moment, especially with those two songs, it was like, 'Mmm, this is great.' Because [Korn] were already onto 'Got the Life,' and they were the biggest band in the world at the time, doing a lot of awesome songs and hits and things. But it wasn't ruthless."
Eyeless and Scissors both appear on Slipknot's self-titled debut, a relentless assault on your senses that changed the metal world as we know it. Slipknot is home to classics Spit It Out, Wait And Bleed and (Sic). It is now available on lemon-coloured vinyl via Maniacs.
Robinson's other collaboration with Slipknot, their second-studio album Iowa is unforgettable and unforgiving in its brutality. It excites and inspires the 'maggot' within each of us. It is a record that will remain forever important to the esteem of the nine-headed metal monster that gave it birth, and of course to the legacy of the two who have now sadly departed this earthly realm (RIP Joey and Paul). Home to People = Shit, The Heretic Anthem, Left Behind and My Plague it is universally beloved by maggots.
Slipknot, who released their seventh full-length album The End, So Far last year, recently shared a surprise new standalone single Bone Church. Streaming now via all digital outlets, Bone Church arrived with an M. Shawn ‘clown’ Crahan-directed video piece titled Yen – Director’s Cut (Bone Church), which finds the multidisciplinary artist, founding member and receiver of Sid's head-butts refreshing footage from the band’s Yen music video.
Next month Australian audiences will get the chance to see Sid, Clown and their Slipknot bandmates orchestrating chaos when the first-ever Knotfest Australia tour kicks off in March. The Brisbane and Melbourne legs of the festival have sold out, with tickets for the Sydney event running low.
Knotfest Australia will see Slipknot headline a lineup completed by Parkway Drive, Megadeth, Trivium, Northlane, Amon Amarth, In Flames, Knocked Loose, Spiritbox, Story Of The Year, Alpha Wolf, Void Of Vision, Bad Omens and Malevolence.
The three-date run of Knotfest Australia will also be Australian maggot's first opportunity to hear tracks from Slipknot's seventh full-length album The End, So Far performed live. To celebrate the widely anticipated release we caught up with Slipknot bass player, Alessandro 'V-Man' Venturella for a discussion about all things The End, So Far, if you haven't already, head on over and give it a read.
