Melbourne heavy rock outfit The Last Martyr have a new dark and fast-paced video for their latest single, Hindsight. The video, directed by David Owen Blakley of Her Name Is Murder Productions (Ocean Grove, Sepultura, Redhook) uses a variety of multimedia layers to create an abstract and distorted world.
The clip draws influence from nu-metal bands of the late-90s, but with a modern twist and is reminiscent of something you’d see at 3 am after a big night out on the town. It's energetic, rapidly moving, reveals the band’s darker side and leaves the viewer feeling somewhat uneasy. Hindsight is the first single since The Last Martyr have released since Like A Ghost back in 2019 and we have the exclusive worldwide premiere right here, right now!

“Playing around with the concept of Hindsight I really wanted to create a music video with many layers, overlays are points of view.” Begins the video’s director, David Owen Blackley. “The choices we make throughout life in the moment, and in reflection, can offer us many different paths and considerations. I wanted to represent this through the use of multiple images, compositing, many layers sharing the same screen and quick flashes to alternative takes. The scenes give example to the various choices and outcomes which can be presented to us at any given time and we see this expressed with the band looking through the peephole throughout the music video."
Produced by Windwaker’s, Chris Lalic, Hindsight was the first collaboration with newcomer to the band, Ricky Andres (bass), who brings a modern electronic and nu-metal influence to TLM’s heavy rock sound. The lyrics were largely downloaded straight to paper in the studio amidst vocalist, Monica, processing a friendship breakdown and are a highlight within the music video.
“I had been holding back my opinions, my voice and who I truly was from this person and over time, without realising, doing so had started to wear away at my self-esteem. The lyrics came together really quickly as we began pre-production of the track and I started recalling other instances where I was being manipulated or emotionally abused. Sometimes it’s only through the benefit of hindsight we can see situations for how they really were and, well, as they say, hindsight is truly a bitch.”
Since releasing the audio for Hindsight, on 23rd April, The Last Martyr’s have been blasting across radio nationally and internationally with support from Triple J's The Racket, Triple M Hard n' Heavy and landing this week on the front page of Triple J Unearthed as a Spotlight Artist of the week.
You can catch The Last Martyr live this weekend supporting Redhook with Fangz on 8th May at Northcote Social Club in Melbourne. The late show is already sold out but you can still get tickets to the 6.30 pm session.
