Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has been many things in his life, drummer, art collector, entrepreneur, father and now the metal icon is...a toilet. Notthing like that guy at the Brass Against concert though, Lars has been turned into an actual toilet by artist and musician Prince Midnight. If Prince Midnight sounds familiar it might be because the Floridian vibraphone led black metal musician and multi- disciplinary artist took the internet by storm when he made a guitar reportedly out of his dead uncle's skeleton. Now the oddball viral art sensation has gone and made a sculpture of '80s era Lars Ulrich, that is an actual functioning toilet!
The Lars Ulrich toilet was created as part of his works for Hellmouth Plumbing Supply, a boutique bathroom outfitter and art concern he started with toilet seat lids carrying the images of classic heavy metal album covers. You can view the toilet in all of its glory below.
Talking to Loudwire, Prince Midnight explained his inspiration for making the toilet, clarifying it is a heartfelt homage and not a rib at the often maligned metal god.
"Make no mistake, this is not me taking a jab at Lars. This is my way, albeit unconventional, to honor Lars Ulrich and Metallica. I could have painted a picture or made a traditional sculpture, but no one would have even noticed, and really, that's not the kind of art and performance I do. The first band I ever loved was Metallica, the first record I became obsessed with, the first music I ever dove into, the concert I ever attended."
Prince Midnight used natural clay to sculpt more of the sculpture but also explained the finer process he followed to make the sculpture.
"I used alginate to mold and cast my own hands and feet in resin. I saved the facial sculpt for last, using photos of Lars from the '80s. Then, like the hands and feet, I made a mold and cast it in resin. I ran steel rebar through the whole thing with fiberglass batting. My backyard has essentially been an auto body shop for the last couple of months."
The fully functional toilet will be relocated and installed in Florida for public use in the near future.
For anyone who has ever wanted to dispose of their copy of St. Anger in an appropriately, in appropriate manner, a trip to Florida might be in order.
