Metallica have Emerged as the only metal band to claim a GRAMMY Award at the 2024 ceremony. The thrash metal icons won the award for 'Best Metal Performance' with the title track from their eleventh studio album 72 Seasons beating out a stacked field featuring songs by Slipknot (Hive Mind), Spiritbox (Jaded), Ghost (Phantom Of The Opera) and 2024 Knotfest Australia co-headliners Disturbed (Bad Man). The win was the ninth of their career from a staggering 26 nominations.
Bass player Rob Trujillo accepted the award on behalf of his Metallica bandmates, giving a short speech during which he excused the absence of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett and thanked the band's collaborative family and urged everyone to "keep instruments in the hands of youth" and "keep the dream alive". As for why his walk up to receive the award was soundtracked by Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne and not the winning song, as was seemingly the custom for all other category winners, is anyone's guess, but you can watch the full speech below and enjoy his infamously sunny disposition for yourself below.
Trujillo of course be headed down under with Infectious Grooves in April. He will be joined in that band by none other than one of the men Metallica bested for the award, former Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg.
Metallica's victory in the category was the only joy for the band, and indeed metal on the evening, as they fell short in their quest for both the 'Best Rock Performance' for which they were nominated for Lux Æterna and 'Best Rock Album' categories for which 72 Seasons was in contention.

Paramore won the 'Best Rock Album' award with ARIA #1 charting album This Is Why, while emo supergroup Boygenius won 'Best Rock Performance' for Not Strong Enough for which they also were awarded the 'Best Rock Song' award.
Multiple members of Slipknot were in attendance, with the recently ousted Weinberg joined in attendance by Clown (Shawn Crahan), Sid Wilson, Michael Pfaff and Alessandro Venturella. Corey Taylor is not believed to have been in attendance.
The band's nomination for 'Best Metal Performance' for Hive Mind off their most recent full-length The End, So Far was the 11th time they'd been in contention for a GRAMMY. They have only won on one of those occasions for Before I Forget which was judged the 'Best Metal Performance' in 2006.
Produced collaboratively by Joe Baressi (Queens Of The Stone Age, Soundgarden, Avenged Sevenfold, Parkway Drive) and Slipknot, The End, So Far is the follow-up to Slipknot’s 2019 We Are Not Your Kind which marked the band’s third consecutive #1 on the ARIA album chart.
