The legendary Norwegian black metal kings Darkthrone recently announced their 17th studio album Old Star, and promised that they would be "bringing the riffs as if the 80's never left!".
Well it looks as though they weren't bullshitting us, because their new track 'The Hardship of the Scots' is seven minutes of pure riff heaven (or hell), as it trudges through dark melody and groove-laden guitars.
It's a really excellent track; curl your hand up into a claw and bang your head:
Drummer/bassist/rhythm guitarist Fenriz says in the video's description:
HI ALL OF YOU! As you may know we have a new album coming out (I am not on social media at all anymore so I don't know what you've seen or heard so far) and Ted said that this time our fans will hear a new song first. So guys here it is – our new track, “The Hardship Of The Scots” and since Ted and me always write our own songs, one song could not fully represent Old Star, but let’s start with this one. Normally the journalists and other scenesters get to check out new albums 2-3-4 months before fans get to hear it, but not this time .. you are first!
– FENRIZ
Darkthrone has consisted solely of Fenriz and Nocterno Culto since 1994, their sound shifting with different influences such as black metal, death metal, thrash and doom metal throughout their career.
Old Star will be out on May 31!
Listen to Darkthrone now.
