Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford has declared Black Sabbath's Paranoid as the best song of all time.
The metal icon made the bold statement in a recent video that he made for Rolling Stone, as part of their recent 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. A proud metal lifer, Halford's top ten is comprised of nine songs from the world of metal and hard rock with the only non-heavy tune to get his ultimate mark of respect David Bowie's Space Oddity at number ten.
Explaining his decision to give Paranoid the nod, Halford offers some insight into the impact the song had on him personally as a fledgling metalhead.
'Paranoid' is my No. 1 song. I'll tell you guys, all of these 10 are my No. 1 — but we have to do lists, right? So, at the top of the list is 'Paranoid' by Black Sabbath. It was one of these game-changing moments that we have in music because it brought out and brought forth a genre and a style of music that lit up the world. Particularly for me as a young musician at the time, 'Paranoid' just took off like a heavy metal rocket."
Halford's list also includes tracks from heavy luminaries Slayer (Angel of Death), Dio (Holy Diver), Metallica (Ride The Lighting), Motorhead (Ace of Spades), Ozzy Osbourne (Bark At The Moon), Pantera (Walk), Scorpions (Blackout) and Rage Against The Machine (Bulls On Parade).
Halford's choices no doubt will spark some heated debate, as all good rankings should, but we're not about to question his qualifications for the task, I mean, he is the iconic force behind Judas Priest and we're just a bunch of metal-loving Maniacs.
