Green Day have unleashed their 14th studio album, Saviors.
Arriving into the world accompanied by new single, Bobby Sox, Saviors, is the latest powerful collaboration between Green Day and Grammy-winning producer Rob Cavallo, whose notable previous work with Green Day includes two of the band’s most iconic albums, 1994’s Dookie and 2004’s American Idiot.
Saviors features previously released bombastic tracks One Eyed Bastard, Dilemma, Look Ma, No Brains!, and The American Dream Is Killing Me, all of which have shown Green Day's rebellious spirit still burns bright. Bobby Sox continues that trend. One of Billie Joe Armstrong's favourite tracks on Saviors, Bobby Sox has all the classic punk rock panache of the Green Day generations of music fans have grown up on.
"Bobby Sox is one of my favourite songs on the album,” shares Billie Joe Armstrong. “It’s the Nineties song that we never wrote. It started out being a song I wrote for my wife but as it materialized, I wanted to switch it up and added, ‘Do you wanna be my boyfriend?’ on top of ‘Do you wanna be girlfriend’... So the song becomes a kind of universal anthem.”
Released today Saviors is available in a variety of formats in our Maniacs store.
Saviors arrives in the same week as Green Day have been dominating social media thanks to a sneaky guerilla gig on a subway station platform and a headline-generating interview with Howard Stern in which they announced they'll be playing BOTH Dookie and American Idiot in full on their upcoming US arena run.
Standout single Dilemma arrived accompanied by a black-and-white music video that finds Billie Joe Armstrong passed out on the ground as he slurs out the brutally honest lyrics, “I was sober now I’m drunk again / I’m in trouble and in love again / I don’t want to be a dead man walking / I don’t want to be a dead man walking.”
The visual follows the band through a classic night of performing hard and partying even harder. As the track winds down, memories start to gain some colour as Billie gets hit with the cold hard sober truth: Drunk Billie made a mess of everything.
“‘Dilemma’ was one of those songs that was kind of easy to write because it was so personal to me,” Billie Joe Armstrong explains. “We’ve seen so many of our peers struggle with addiction and mental illness. This song is all about the pain that comes from those experiences.”
In 2023, Green Day kicked off Rocktober by releasing their first single from Saviors– The American Dream Is Killing Me – following a massive Las Vegas takeover during the When We Were Young Festival weekend.
The record comes just ahead of Dookie’s 30th anniversary - celebrations have already begun with the release of a massive deluxe edition of the album and a surprise show in Las Vegas, where the band performed Dookie from front to back to a sold-out crowd of superfans.
