Green Day have shared a new single The American Dream Is Killing Me. The first single from their freshly announced 14th full-length album Saviors (out January 19 on Reprise/Warner Records), The American Dream Is Killing Me is a fiery call to action.
"The American Dream Is Killing Me was one of the last tracks written and recorded by Green Day for 'Saviors'. “As soon we cut it, we said, `Okay, that’s going first,’” shares frontman Billie Joe Armstrong who describes the new song as “a look at the way the traditional 'American Dream' doesn’t work for a lot of people -- in fact, it’s hurting a lot of people.”
The American Dream Is Killing Me is accompanied by a video directed by Brendan Walter and Ryan Baxley, that channels the explosive spirit of the lyrical narrative into a black-and-white zombie disaster movie.
The band debuted The American Dream Is Killing Me live last weekend during their triumphant and electrifying Las Vegas takeover, consisting of a sold-out surprise show at the 800-capacity Fremont where they performed their iconic album Dookie in full and back-to-back headlining performances at When We Were Young Festival.
The Dookie connection is set to run strong through the next era of Green Day, with Saviors produced by the same man who guided their mainstream breakthrough, Rob Cavallo. Recorded in London and Los Angeles, Saviors is the latest powerful collaboration between Green Day and the Grammy-winning Cavallo, whose notable previous work with Green Day includes not only Dookie but also the culture-shifting 2004 punk opera American Idiot.
Fittingly Saviors will arrive just ahead of the 30th anniversary celebrations for Dookie. Those celebrations began early with the release of a massive deluxe edition of the album and that special surprise show in Las Vegas.
Placing the spotlight back on one of the most influential albums of all time, the Dookie 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is a must-have for fans of the five-time GRAMMY® Award-winning band. Scheduled for release on September 29th, the Dookie 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition features a bunch of new and rare content that will satisfy even the most fussy of completionists.
As part of this blockbuster collection, the California trio celebrate their landmark 10x platinum, diamond-certified GRAMMY® Award-winning third full-length offering and major label debut by unveiling previously unreleased Dookie demos—4-track Demos and Cassette Demos—and Outtakes as well as two seminal live recordings, Live At Woodstock (1994) – for the first time on streaming – and the previously unreleased Live In Barcelona (June 5 ’94).

Dookie 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition will be available everywhere digitally as well as a limited-edition 6-LP vinyl box set and 4-CD box set. Plus, a special version of the 6-LP vinyl box set will only be available on the band’s web store and at indie record stores with each record pressed on a different shade of brown vinyl. Loaded to the brim with collector’s items, the vinyl box set boasts a roll of Dookie dog poop bags, a five-button set, air freshener, a postcard, a bumper sticker, a kiss-cut large magnet sheet, a paper aeroplane, a black-and-white “Coloring Page” cover litho insert, and a poster of the alternate cover art. The CD box set consists of two stickers, a five-button set, an air freshener, and a single soft vinyl magnet. Both box set versions feature a heartfelt personal intro penned by GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Rob Cavallo and extensive liner notes from GRAMMY® Award winner Bob Mehr.
Dookie’s influence remains downright inescapable. It has sold a staggering 20 million copies worldwide and stands out as "the first punk album to be certified Diamond by the RIAA for North American sales in excess of 10 million.” Out of four 1995 GRAMMY® Award nominations, it notably garnered “Best Alternative Album.”Rolling Stone touted it on the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” and Pitchfork retrospectively christened it “one of the greatest teenage wasteland albums of any generation.
The Dookie 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is available now via Warner Music Australia.
The band has also issued a run of merch to celebrate including this oversized vintage shirt.
