Tasmanian alt-pop-rockers Spkezy just dropped their infectious, genre-bending single Hell House upon an unsuspecting world. Hell House builds upon an 80s inspired soundscape with a power-packed grunge chorus and futuristic EDM synth pulses throughout. It is the sound of the past, present and future, together at last.
For these true musicians, Hell House is a representation of their endless desire to push the boundaries of their creativity and melodic sensibilities without sacrificing meaning. Vocalist Luke Vassen shares some insight into the songs lyrical inspirations.
"Hell House is a trip into a pretty scary place. A place that was/is nurtured by substance and alcohol abuse. A place that can make it hard to distinguish fact from fiction & friend from foe. The feeling of not knowing who to trust, even if that is yourself.”
The origins of this genre-blending approach are in part the result of their experiences living in the diverse Tasmanian music scene. With this in mind, Spkezy were kind enough to prepare this quick guide to the best spots to catch a gig in Tassie, listing their favourite venues in the apple isle with handy little 'google style' reviews of each, to help you find the one best suited to your niche.
Brisbane Hotel, Hobart
Cool, grimey vibe. Something for everyone, and lots of fun to play!
Club 54/Batman Fawkner, Launceston
Not around anymore, but was such a good venue. Nice and big, good sound and good times.
Altar, Hobart
We haven’t played there, but watched bands play there. Awesome venue.
The Oak, Launceston
The boat shed has a really nice feel to it. Played there with our old band and watched lots of bands here. Always a fun time.
Uni Bar, Hobart
Nice stage, awesome sound! Just an overall nice venue to play and watch music at.
Spkezy are Luke Vaessen (vocals), Joel Hallam (guitar, samples, keyboard), Owen Broad (drums) and Ryan Barker (bass). They pride themselves as being completely DIY. This unique element spans across the near entirety of the band's disciplines from the production and recording to the making and refinement of music video and single art. This undoubtedly provides a more authentic experience for the listener as they can connect with the true artistic vision of Spkezy, untainted by the influence of external parties.
