Progressive rock legends Coheed and Cambria have dropped a new single called 'Jessie's Girl 2' - a sequel to the iconic Australian tune from the 80s by Rick Springfield!
And it seems that Coheed have not only got Rick's stamp of approval on the new version, but they've released a new music video with Springfield starring in it too!
The new version keeps the same overall vibes from the original, but has got that Coheed kick throughout to make it their own. It also extends the narrative portrayed in the original to keep the story ticking along. Check out the awesome video set in Rick Springfield's bar:
The genesis of 'Jessie’s Girl 2' dates back to Coheed and Cambria studio sessions from 2019, when the band began riffing on an idea as vocalist/guitarist Claudio Sanchez extemporaneously sang the hook from Springfield’s classic. A germ of an idea was planted as Sanchez pondered, “what if a band created a sequel for a song that wasn’t originally theirs?”.
After fleshing out new lyrics and tinkering with the concept (even considering a future album of like-minded material called Sequels), the band revisited the idea during their time spent at home quarantining during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Sanchez pitched the idea to Springfield on IG Live.
There are some Jessie's Girl 2 merch bundles over at the Maniacs store including a trucker hat, posters and more!
We've still got one question though - how the hell does a 71-year-old Rick Springfield still look like he's in his 40's?!
Listen to Coheed and Cambria now.
