Australian skate-punk icons Bodyjar are gearing up to hit the road to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their classic album No Touch Red.
A landmark release that saw the Melbourne band gain the attention of skate punks both at home and abroad, No Touch Red contains Bodyjar classics Remote Controller, You've Taken Everything and You Say. The record will be played in full by Bodyjar in rooms nationwide in September.
Supporting them on this run will be none other than Perth mainstays Gyroscope, who will be celebrating the 15th anniversary of their ARIA #1 album Breed Obsession, home to timeless anthems Snakeskin and Breed Obsession. Adding to the nostalgia fest will be reunited Melbourne rockers Klinger.
In honour of this totally bodacious tour package, we caught up with Bodyjar singer/guitarist and owner of the skate shop Locality Store, Cam Baines who was kind enough to curate a playlist of the best songs to skate to.
It's an expertly chosen collection of tunes from a man who has a fair claim to being an expert in these matters, with the only potential criticism being that he failed to include Bodyjar's Tony Hawk's Pro-Skater 3 anthem, Not The Same.
My Top 8 Songs To Skate To by Cam Baines (Bodyjar)
TSOL - Red Shadows
"From the album called Change Today one of the best skate rock albums ever. Singer Jack Grisham channels to the ghost of Jim Morrison to create this rad Goth/Punk album. Classic music to lay a Smith grind too."
Van Halen - Get Up
"I used to crank 5150 from the 'Van Hagar' era when skating my friend's backyard ramp in the '90s. I used to think he was singing 'get air’ but it was 'get up', oh well we all hear what we want to hear."
Bad Religion - Anesthesia
"This is here just because it is one of the best pubs rock albums ever and I discovered it when the older dudes were cranking it for sessions at Vermont Ramp."
Dead Kennedy - California Uber Alles
"What a corker, just has the perfect punk spirit which worked so well with skateboarding."
Descendents - Coolidge
"Probably the best punk-pop song written. It was on a VISION skate video soundtrack in the late '80s has a fucking cool energy to it, I needed to hear more straight away so I bought a cassette and lent it to everyone at the ramp. When I got it back you couldn’t even read the song titles originally printed on the tape."
Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalised
"'All wanted was a Pepsi and she wouldn’t give it to me, gold"
Metallica - Master of Puppets
"This album was and still is a top-5 metal album of all time, so badass!! Perfect for a shred."
Sublime - Santeria -
"Made me feel like I was in California skating with the Bones Brigade"
