Canadian pop radio station KiSS FM 104.9 played Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name non-stop for more than 24 hours. The station's usual contemporary pop playlist was completely discarded by DJ's in favour of repetition of the 1992 anthem. It was widely reported to be in protest of widespread layoffs at the station, with everyone from listener's to departed radio hosts and Tom Morello himelf taking the bait. However whether by itention or design, The Guardian is reporting that the station has since announced a format change to a new alternative music format named Sonic Radio. They received the following statement from the station's content director Christian Hall
"In keeping with radio’s reputation of being fun, and the format’s reputation as being a tad disruptive, we couldn’t think of a better way to capture our local listeners’ attention than by playing the iconic anthem Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine non-stop for 30 hours, and, well … it wound up catching the world’s attention”
While it is dissappointing to the more rebelliously minded folks here at Maniacs that this was not an impromptu protest, we can't argue with the results, not with the idea of having another alternative radio station in the mainstream.
