Very few vocalists in rock history have packed as much emotional resonance into every note as The Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan.
An evocative powerhouse with a unique accent and an instinctive knack for storytelling, O'Riordan's vocals were the standout characteristic of the band's rise to global prominence. It is O'Riordan's delivery of The Cranberries' signature-hit Zombie that embedded the song so deep into our cultural consciousness, with her lived experience of 'the troubles' able to be felt in every evocative note.
Despite this unique quality being impossible to replicate, Zombie remains one of the more frequently covered songs of its era, with thousands of covers ranging from Bad Wolves to bad karaoke singers available all over YouTube. Arguably none of them hold a candle to the original.
If one band could theoretically do a cover of Zombie that might stand up against the original, it would be Deftones. That thesis provides the basis for the newest upload from the multi-talented content wizard, Anthony Vincent, who has taken it upon himself to record a cover of Zombie in the style of Deftones iconic album White Pony. Watch Vincent transform the haunting protest song into a gloomier, moodier think-piece, complete with note-perfect Chino Moreno impersonation, below.
