The humble BLEGH! Loud, abrasive, fuelled by emotion, nearly always followed by a breakdown, this five-letter nonsense word expresses more than any 'proper' word ever could. The true origin of this primal vocalisation remains to this day unknown and shall perhaps forever remain so, but its omnipresence in modern metalcore can largely be traced to one man, the great Sam Carter of Architects. While Carter himself has now abandoned the 'blegh', his contribution to its magnificence will forever remain. Architects - Naysayer
With over so many recorded "bleghs" and counting, this list could rightfully feature nothing but Architects tracks, but we've had to limit ourselves to just one, so here it is, narrowly edging out the three "bleghs" in Gravedigger, at 1:01-1:03, the definitive "blegh" in Architects history.
Stray From The Path - Badge & A Bullet
If one vocalist was to rival Sam Carter for excessive but effective use of the "blegh" then our pick is Drew York from political-hardcore punkers Stray From The Path. York has been busting out venomous "bleghs" pretty much since the band started. Again, we've had to limit ourselves to one, so edging out the"blegh" in Damien, and the pre-breakdown "blegh" in Fortune Teller is this "blegh" (or "bleah" as it reads on the lyric sheet) from the inflammatory Badge & A Bullet. Motionless In White - Scissorhands (The Last Snow)
Chris Motionless is quite fond of a"blegh" often of a more theatrical nature. This one though, at 2:27 in Scissorhands (The Last Snow) is full of pure venom, narrowly nudging out the one in Necessary Evil for inclusion in this list. The band just announced a new album, so perhaps some new "bleghs" are on the horizon?
Wage War - The River
Metalcore monsters Wage War know their way around a solid "blegh" or two. The best though, for both emotional impact and pure venom is the one that hits following a brief coughing fit in The River at around :051. "Cough, cough, BLEGH" we felt that.
Lorna Shore - Accumalatory Genophage
As illustrated by Wage War often the best "bleghs" sound like someone hocking up a massive bit of phlegm, it's gross, but it also sounds brutal and demonic and this "blegh" from Lorna Shore is an all-time classic of the "phlegm blegh" genre.
