From luscious locks to flame-throwing guitars, we take a look at some of the most metal movie characters of all time.
1. Saruman – Lord of the Rings
Saruman appears in both The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy as a powerful white wizard, turned to the dark side. With some metal-worthy locks and a beard to match, Saruman is played by the late Christopher Lee. Christopher Lee was a secret metal fan for many years and released his first heavy metal album when he was in his nineties.
2. Satan – Tenacious D in “The Pick of Destiny”
Lucifer, Beelzebub, Old Nick…You don’t get much heavier than Satan himself. For Tenacious D’s black comedy rock musical The Pick of Destiny, Dave Grohl underwent seven hours of makeup a day to become the tasty riff-loving devil who plays in rock offs and tries to take KG back to hell…to be his little bitch.
3. Michael Myers – Halloween
Committing murder at the age of 6 and escaping from a mental asylum 15 years later, Michael Myers is the main antagonist from the Halloween series of slasher films. Unsettling, creepy and completely insane Michael Myers could easily fit into the background of a Slipknot show.
4. Coma-Doof Warrior – Mad Max: Fury Road
Probably the most metal movie of 2015, the Coma-Doof Warrior from George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road became an overnight sensation. The Doof Warrior is a member of Immortan Joe's War Boys and is portrayed by Australian musician iOTA. Missing both of his eyeballs, he wears a mask over his head made from his deceased mother's face. Oh, and did we forget to mention his flame-throwing guitar? This guy is metal perfection.
5. One Eye – Valhalla Rising
In 11th-century Scandinavia, a one-eyed, tattooed warrior by the name of One Eye stages a violent uprising against those who enslaved him. Mads Mikkelsen who plays One Eye is the definition of metal in this film as he journeys to new land, misuses psychoactive drugs, and wreaks havoc on pretty much everyone.
6. Dr. Satan – House of 1000 Corpses
Dr. Satan was created by Rob Zombie and portrayed by Walter Phelan in House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects. A murderer, torturer and master surgeon who once went by the name of S. Quentin Quale, Dr. Satan was an intern at a mental hospital where he performed forbidden brain surgery on patients to create a race of ‘superhumans’.
7. Conan the Barbarian - Conan the Barbarian
A barbarian of the far north; Conan was born on the battlefield and grew to a respected warrior by age fifteen. He spent years as a slave turning the wheel of pain and was trained in the deadly arts by secretive War Masters. Conan the Barbarian inspired a wave of ‘barbarian metal’ and pretty much every character or place featured in film has since been taken as a band name.
8. Darth Maul – Star Wars
A deadly, agile Sith Lord trained by the evil Darth Sidious, Darth Maul was a ferocious warrior wielding a double-bladed lightsaber. Arguably any member of the Sith Order could make this list but there’s something about the red and black, horn bearing face of Darth Maul that really belongs in a metal band.
9. Predator – Predator
An alien race evolved to effectively wipe out any species; Predators are one of the most brutal hunters in the galaxy. They kill for sport and honour hanging their victims up as trophies for all to see. Predator from the Predator franchise is played by Peter Kevin Hall and standing at a menacing 2.18 metres tall, he is metal enough for us.
10. Selene – Underworld
Kate Beckinsale absolutely slays it as Selene in the action horror film series Underworld. This badass vampire death dealer fights tyranny and seeks to avenge her deceased family. Sporting a head-to-toe look of black leather and spandex Selene is a gothic vampire goddess and 100% metal.
