There's nothing like a good old metal time capsule to unearth some historical gems. Last time we had a look at the very first time Deftones played 'Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) live in 1997, and today we've been graced with the audio release of the legendary thrash band Exodus playing 'No Love' at the Day In The Dirt festival back in 1984.
That's a long-ass time ago. In fact, it was even before Exodus had put any records out (they did have two demos in 1982 and 1984), with their first full length dropping in 1985.
It's a serious bummer that there's no video footage of this, but beggars can't be choosers! Check it out below:
Guitarist Gary Holt shed some light on the importance of the festival:
"'Day In The Dirt' was almost like the Bay Area thrash metal Woodstock, our own underground version on the legendary 'Day On The Green' shows we all attended so many times. What happened that day at Aquatic Park in Berkeley has gone down in Bay Area lore as an epic day for the underground thrash scene. The brainchild of the late great Wes Robinson, we were fortunate to have been a key part of such a great show. It was Rick Hunolt's second Exodus show as well, I believe!"
Of course, Exodus never made it to "big four" status, but Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett played in the band until 1983, and Gary Holt also now plays in Slayer, who also share a mutual drummer with Exodus in Paul Bostaph. Talk about connecting the thrash dots.
Listen to Exodus now.
