Iggy Pop has revealed that he was once asked to consider joining AC/DC as their vocalist.
The 'Godfather of Punk' shared the details of the informal but serious approach to step into Bon Scott's shoes during an interview with the New York Times. Iggy explains that that the offer came from AC/DC's manager, who simply asked him "Are you interested in joining AC/DC?". Iggy explained that while he appreciated the groups musical output, he never seriously considered the offer. "I listened to their record, I thought, I can't fill that bill. I wasn't like, ugh, I don't like them. It was quite well made. They do careful work. But I'm not what they needed." The offer came prior to Iggy reforming The Stooges.
Iggy also shared details of his friendship with Bon, recalling that there's several photos out there of the two of them partying, and many of them are of nights he has very little to no memory of. "I had some very wonderful encounter with Bon somewhere, and we were both drunk and stoned, I see pictures sometimes. I go, I don't remember, but that's me with Bon!"
Iggy was speaking to the NYT as part of the promotional campaign for his new record, Every Loser, due for release on January 6. The recent single, Strung Out Johnny, displays the Godfather of Punk at his scintillating best.
Every Loser will be the first album released under the Gold Tooth Records label, which was founded by Every Loser's GRAMMY Award-winning, multi-platinum executive producer, Andrew Watt.
Featuring a murderers’ row of modern-day rock icons including the Iggy Pop & The Losers lineup of Watt, Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses) and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Every Loser sets Iggy’s lyrical aggressions toward physical and existential nemeses atop a rock solid foundation provided by members of Blink 182 (Travis Barker), Foo Fighters (the late, Taylor Hawkins), Jane’s Addiction (Chris Chaney, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery), Pearl Jam (Josh Klinghoffer, Stone Gossard) and Smith's Red Hot Chili Peppers bandmate Josh Klinghoffer.
The result is 11 songs by the man who refused to go gently into that good night and is once again charging fearlessly at life itself with Every Loser.
The new album will also be available as limited-edition vinyl, cassettes and CDs – Available HERE.
As part of the release of Every Loser, Iggy is offering an exclusive relaunch of the legendary fanzine, PUNK Magazine, from founder and legendary editor John Holmstrom with a full Iggy issue, which contains an exclusive interview with Iggy by Flea. Iggy originally graced the cover of the John Holmstrom Fanzine in July 1976.
