Hardcore band Turnstile are back with not only new music but a short film to boot. The Baltimore band released their first song in 18 months titled Mystery in May, and are now putting it all out there with a new EP Turnstile Love Connection (of which the track was from) and a companion short film of the same name directed by Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates.
The EP features a solid mixture of the band’s driven, catchy-as-the-dickens hardcore, though it also includes some considerable deviations into pop-rock territory at times. The film, meanwhile, is a conceptual performance of the EP that sort of feels like all the elements of a Wes Anderson film were tossed in a jar that was then furiously shaken.
You’ve got a run-down stadium, you’ve got a Vespa scooter, you’ve got a house with baroque molding, a performance backed with soft pink — the works. It’s definitely in keeping with the band’s current aesthetic, though it might cause some praying-hands-neck-tattoo hardcore dudes to fold their arms most frumpily.
Turnstile Love Connection made theatrical debuts across the U.S. last week including premieres at Los Angeles’ Brain Dead Studios, Brooklyn’s Nitehawk Cinema, Baltimore’s Charles Theater, and Columbus’ Studio 35 Cinema.
