Doom is every metalhead’s dream game. Combining Halo with Satanism, Heavy Metal with Electronic, and garnished with a nice wedge of blood ‘n’ guts, the Doom series will rope you in and spit you out with a set of square eyes.
Fans of the game take our hats off to the champion composer, Mick Gordon, for writing some of the gnarliest riffs found in the bloodiest of arenas. Although we praise the guy for his work, we have been asking ourselves the question... which of our favorite bands would we like to hear takeover the Doom soundtrack.
Thy Art Is Murder
Take one look at the cover image for Hate and tell me that’s not a snapshot from one of the boss fights which took you hours to complete on Nightmare.
We think Thy Art have a comfy position on this list for their brutal approach to heavy music. Seriously, imagine coming up against the Cyberdemon as ‘Doomed From Birth’ starts ripping apart your speakers.
Author and Punisher
If you are yet to come across Author and Punisher, let us be the first to introduce you to something wonderful.
Mechanical engineer, Tristan Shone, is the technical mastermind behind this Industrial project, using synths to produce distorted drum and bass rhythms and grinding leads which take on machine-like characteristics. A perfect concoction to compose devilish electronic music, paired nicely with the game of a similar tone.
Whether it be in an arena battle or exploration around Hell, we want to hear Author and Punisher in Doom!
Linkin Park
Beside the fact that Hybrid Theory absolutely slaps when combined with any first-person shooter game in general, combining it with a Doom boss fight just raises the slap factor to a whole new level.
Picture Doom guy just yeeting himself into a glory kill as ‘Points of Authority’, drops.
Periphery
If you haven’t seen Mick Gordon and Matt Halpern rip and tear through a melody of Doom tracks, then check this out.
And, if you think that Periphery are on this list because Doom emits big djent energy... you’re right. Although, we reckon if the band brought the same djent energy as ‘MAKE TOTAL DESTROY’ and ’Zyglrox’ to the game, we’d be in for one hell of a campaign.
Behemoth
What would this list be without a tiny bit of Black Metal?
Behemoth’s demonic aesthetic and haunting songwriting just screams Doom - and their freaky stage getup could easily see them as prophetic characters within the game!
Utilising orchestral elements, such as brass and choir vocals, throughout their music creates a sense of power which would suit perfectly when matched with the colossal landscape of Hell and the cultist behavior of Doom’s baddies.
Also, if you didn’t mistaken the ambient music on Exultia as the ‘Bartzabel’ intro, then go back and listen.
Meshuggah
When you finish this article, chuck on the game, mute it, blast Koloss, then come back and tell us if you’re convinced that Meshuggah deserve a shot at writing the score for Doom.
We’re certain that the band are the number one musical and tonal influence for the game because, goddamn, even the synth tones are similar.
We’d even go as far to say that battling the Marauder for the first time is as difficult as tapping along to ‘Bleed’!
We know that there are a huge number of bands we left out, so let us know which ones you think should feature in the game - or if you agree with our list. Either way, we hope this has inspired you to chuck on the Doom soundtrack and give your neck a work out!
